Hospitals in Pennsylvania are licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Pennsylvania had 249 state-licensed hospitals and VA hospital facilities as of July 2018.

One hundred and eighty-four of these facilities (148) were nonprofit, 86 were for-profit or “investor-owned,” and fifteen were public hospitals run by the federal, state, or, in one instance, the city of Philadelphia.

There were 1,880 operating rooms and 42,817 licensed beds overall. Of the 156 general acute hospitals, 29 were psychiatric facilities, 22 provided long-term acute care, 21 provided rehabilitation, and 7 were VA facilities.

An additional 10 general acute specialty facilities were also included. The UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside in Pittsburgh was the largest hospital in terms of beds and operating rooms.
