As the nation’s first public veterinary school, Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine takes pride in its heritage while shaping the future of veterinary professional practice, education, research and service.

Fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the College of Veterinary Medicine is dedicated to the enhancement of health and well-being of animals and human beings.

In order for them to carry out their mission, the college focuses on students within their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program and their various graduate programs in each of their five academic departments – Biomedical Sciences, Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine, Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine, and Veterinary Pathology.

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine professional degree program at Iowa State University is a four-year program with three years of pre-clinical classroom instruction followed by one year of clinical training in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

At the conclusion of the program, Iowa State students are prepared as “practice-ready” veterinarians.

They’re beyond the classroom experiences which include internships, externships, international programs, mentorships, and the opportunity to work not only in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center but with Iowa Veterinary Specialties clinic in Des Moines, the Swine Medicine Education Center, Great Plains Veterinary Education Center and Des Moines’ Blank Park Zoo.

Their graduates demonstrate competency in knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, aptitudes and behaviors in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery in a broad range of species.

The college also offers combined advanced degree programs for concurrent DVM students including the Masters of Business Administration with Iowa State’s College of Business and the Masters of Public Health with the University of Iowa’s College of Public Health.
